Category: Let's talk
okay first of all, I don't know wich category this topic would go under, so I'm posting it here. now for the subject matter at hand.
I'm thinking of switching phone companies. I have cingular and I need to get an accessible phone with talking caller ID and stuff, and I can't aford talks. so I'm wondering. if there are any any happy verizon customers wwho have these kind of phones, and what they like about them, how much the cost, and what the cheapest plan is. sorry if this is a scrabled mess, it's late. anyways, let me know if you can understand this since it's a mess.

If you're with cingular, why not just get them to provide talks? They have a program for that.
If you are tied into a contract with Cingular and it has not expired they will charge you from 150 to 250 dollars for terminating the contract, also you'dhave to buy a phone with T Mobile or whatever phone company you switched to since Cingular phones are generally locked (unless you can find a service to breakthe lock on the phone, itis possible butI think it is not strictly legal).
So your costs of switching phone companies will be quite high.
What were you looking to spendon an accessible phone with Talks?
I think the talks software is about 300 dollars,
it's £150 gbp.
If Cingular is still doing the rebate thing then you end up paying $200 in the end.
Did I read correctly? Do you "need" an accessible phone with speech? Why is an accessible phone something you "need", rather than something that you want?
It depends. I was happy when I got my phone with talks. No more asking people who was calling or how to change a setting.
that's exactly why I need an accessible phone. I don't wanna keep asking people who called me or have people add contacts to my phone. I know that people need to ask for helpfor somethings sometimes, but this is one of the things I'd like to do by myself.
Cingular, or now At and T offers you lots of services for free that will help you use your regular phone without Talks. Voice dial is one of these. Have you sign up as a blind person? If so voice dialing is free and can be managed online. Also AT and T is going to offer the Nokia N75 I think it is with another talking software other then talks called mobile speaks soon. The phone already talks without the software. Call 611 from your handset and ask the rep to connect you to the department for customers with disabilities and then tell that rep you are blind and ask them to explain all the services that are available to you and the latest Nokia phone. You'll stay around. AT and T and also T-mobile are great, but AT and T is a better service in my opinion and I've had them both. You can also learn to add contacts to your phone without Talks. The nokia phone will allow this without it. The price is $100 and you can get a referbished model for less. 611 now.
Good luck with finding a good accessible phone. You'll love talks. It's very worth the mony.
Yeah, it's well worth the money all right. I'm now at the end of my contract with Orange and I've been using Talks Premium for 18 months since I got my Nokia N70, free with the phone and broadband contract. We upgraded from Talks series 60 which I had on my old Nokia 7610 and that cost me around US $100 plus $20 postage and packing. Talks from scratch though will cost you around $400. Have you tried mobilespeak? Apparently that's supposed to be cheaper. I thought about getting that myself when I was thinking about getting my first accessible phone after a series of difficulties I encountered with various sighted Nokia phones, the 3210, 3310 and 3510I, a Philips phone and a Samsung A800 which mum's got now.
Jen.
I've heard a lot of good things about mobile speak. It doesn't sound as good as talks though. Bummer.
I like talks because it has elequence and that's about the only one I can understand from listening to jaws speak all day.
Well, Smart Hal has Eloquence, too, if you must.
I like eloquence. It's nice to listen to.
